This program builds new houses for low-income families whose homes are damaged or unlivable due to storms and climate change – each house costs $2,158 USD to build.

Basket Raffle

“The Way” PSR students and Social Concerns Committee have put together a variety of appealing baskets to be raffled. Proceeds from the Basket Raffle will also benefit Balay sa Kabos (House of the Poor).

Raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10 and will be for sale after all Masses on March 29 and March 30 and at the Soup Supper on April 1.

The program was launched in 2018 and gained significant momentum after Typhoon Odette struck in 2021, devastating thousands of homes in Bohol province. While the program has made considerable progress in reaching affected communities, the need for assistance remains urgent. Families continue to grapple with the long-term impacts of climate change and ongoing economic challenges, making recovery difficult. Additionally, there is a growing demand to support families who have recently survived fires, providing them with the immediate resources needed to rebuild their homes and restore their lives.

Balay sa Kabos gives families who need a decent dwelling an adequate, suitable, and safe home.

To be eligible for the Balay sa Kabos program, families must meet the following criteria:

  • Totally damaged house
  • Monthly household income of P5,000 to P10,000 (approx. $87.25 – $175.50 USD)
  • Loss of job/livelihood due to calamities (e.g., typhoon, fire, etc.)
  • With household members who are elderly, pregnant, and PWDs
  • Ready to participate in the activities related to housebuilding

The housebuilding cbegins immediately once the beneficiaries are ready.

It usually takes 1-2 weeks to build the house, depending on weather conditions. As soon as the house is completed, the beneficiary is presented a certificate that proves the house is theirs and the parish priest visits for the blessing and turnover of the house.

During his January 2025 visit to the Philippines, Fr. Lito blessed a new home built by the Balay sa Kabos Foundation.
